5 Best Swimming Lessons in Birmingham to Make a Splash
I’m a regular at Birmingham’s swimming pools, but a few laps in the shallow end won’t make me lake-ready. I’d like to feel properly at home when the water gets deeper.
The best swimming lessons in Birmingham could help me trade my poolside confidence for a stronger stroke. There are gentle sessions for nervous beginners and livelier classes for little splashers.
I’ve picked out local lessons with instructors who can help you find your fins. Let’s see which ones are worth diving into.
How much does a swimming lesson cost in Birmingham?
At council-run leisure centres, casual pool entry costs £3.60–£7. Group lesson packages start at £33.
Independent swim clubs charge around £6 per lesson. You’ll usually need to book a block of 10.
Private one-to-one taster lessons start at £24.99. Standard packages start at £39.99, while freelance tutors charge £15–£50 per hour.
University programmes may charge a £30 sign-up fee, followed by monthly Direct Debit payments.
1. Second Nature Swimming

Address: Saintbury Dr, Shirley, Solihull B91 3SZ (beside Birmingham)
Contact: 07792 379074
Hours: Wednesday 1:45–9 PM; Thursday 12:45–9:15 PM; Saturday 10:45 AM–7 PM. Select Sunday adult lessons by booking; check availability
If deep water still gives you the jitters, Second Nature Swimming could help you find your fins. Its private adult lessons focus on water safety and confidence before polishing your strokes.
You can learn one-to-one or bring a friend for a two-to-one session. Instructors get into the pool with beginners, so you won’t be left decoding arm movements from the sidelines.
There’s time to practise in the pool after your lesson, and adult classes include access to the spa and lounge.
Once you’re feeling braver, the school’s seasonal open-water experiences offer a chance to try swimming beyond the pool.
The Solihull venue is a trek if you’re based in central Birmingham, though. Regular lessons run on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, so you’ll need to check the booking calendar if you’re banking on a Sunday slot.

Katalina is excellent
Katalina is excellent. She teaches very effectively by giving individual, personalised feedback and focusing on each person’s weaknesses one by one. This approach really helps you improve and learn properly. She is extremely patient and highly professional. I felt supported throughout the whole learning process and made great progress thanks to her teaching style.

Katalina is friendly and very clear with her instructions and advice
My wife and I had a trial lesson with Katalina this week, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We are 70 years old and totally lacked any confidence in the water. In just one hour, Katalina showed us so many basic things to do and has made us determined to make a block booking of lessons. Katalina is friendly and very clear with her instructions and advice.

2. S4 Swim School Castle Vale

Address: Castle Pool, Farnborough Road, Castle Vale
Contact: 07814 813309
Hours: S4 lessons:
Thursday
- 4 PM – 6 PM
- 6 PM – 7 PM (S6 Coaching)
- 9:45 AM – 10:30 AM (S4 Adults)
Friday
- 4 PM – 6:30 PM
- 6 PM – 7 PM (S6 Coaching)
Saturday
- 11:40 AM – 12:40 PM (S4 Adults, ladies-only)
Sunday
- 8:45 AM – 10:15 AM
If your child’s likely to disappear into a sea of splashy classmates, S4 Swim School Castle Vale keeps its term-time children’s groups to seven swimmers at most. That sounds much easier for a nervous beginner to get their bearings.
Beginner groups typically have two or three teaching team members, with poolside helpers brought in where needed.
I like that a swim coordinator oversees sessions and tracks progress, so parents can see how those hard-won kicks are coming along.
There’s a route beyond the basics, with S6 coaching for older children and lessons for adults. The Saturday adult session is ladies-only, which may suit swimmers who’d feel more comfortable learning in that setting.
The Castle Vale timetable takes some juggling if you need a weekend children’s class: those lessons are listed for Sunday mornings, with none on Saturday.
Mixed adult swimmers won’t find a Saturday slot here either.

Did a swim intensive course Monday – Friday this week for my two sons and can see such a difference in their confidence already. Really pleased, and the staff were wonderful. For boys that didn’t want to go swimming ever, we’ve now signed up for weekly lessons here.

3. Sue’s Swim School Cardinal Wiseman

Address: Old Oscott Hill, Kingstanding
Contact: 0121 714 8388; [email protected]
Hours: See term calendar
If your child’s swimming ambition goes beyond making the biggest splash, Sue’s Swim School has room to grow. This family-run school has taught since 1982 and has used the Cardinal Wiseman pool since 1988.
I like its ten-pathway approach, which takes swimmers from early skills through lane swimming and into the Lifeguard Academy.
Children aged three and up have lessons at Cardinal Wiseman throughout the week, including Saturday and Sunday mornings.
The school uses qualified instructors, and parents can check the term calendar and Cardinal Wiseman welcome pack before lessons begin. That’s handy when you’re trying to fit swimming around the rest of the family’s weekend plans.
There’s one catch for families with tiny paddlers: under-three parent-and-child lessons aren’t offered at this venue. Adult options are narrow here too, with only a Wednesday evening ladies-only class on the timetable.

She has progressed well, and all the teachers and assistants have been fantastic
My daughter started swimming with Sue’s swim school when she was 5 years old (2022). She has progressed well and all the teachers and assistants have been fantastic.
Any issues with the pool/ building is communicated quickly and throughly to the parents and there is a swimmers page to access your child’s achievements and progress.

Great communication on emails, easy-to-use online portal, and the swimming instructors are all so lovely and fantastic with children. Special shout-out to Zoe, who my daughter absolutely loves. My daughter has really progressed with her swimming, so overall we’re very pleased and would recommend Sue’s Swim School 👍 ❤️

4. Swim Now

Address: Livingwell Health Club, Hilton Hotel, The NEC
Contact: 0121 396 1332
Hours: Contact to schedule service
If group lessons leave you feeling like one fish in a very busy pond, Swim Now gives you more room to focus. At its Hilton NEC venue, you can book private one-to-one or two-to-one lessons shaped around your ability and goals.
I like that the coaches work with adults and children, including autistic swimmers. Swim Now says every teacher completes an enhanced DBS check, and you can ask for a male or female coach if that helps you feel at ease.
There’s a taster lesson if you’d like to test the water before committing to a plan. The company has other Birmingham-area venues too, which gives you another option if the NEC is a trek.
The booking terms need a careful look before you dive in, though.
Changing or cancelling a taster requires seven days’ notice, while monthly plans start with a three-month minimum commitment.

Thank you so much for making us fall in love with swimming!
Gracie was brilliant in helping us get our confidence and build our skills for swimming! She was patient and kind when things didn’t go quite right and would always reassure us. We practised what we learnt in our local leisure centre, which definitely helped build our confidence.

5. Swim Tech Ltd

Address: 29 Elliston Avenue, Great Barr
Contact: 07432 446232; [email protected]
Hours: Contact to schedule service
If a noisy public pool makes you want to retreat to dry land, Swim Tech’s private setup in Great Barr may feel more inviting.
Julie Finnigan teaches adults and children one-to-one in a spa pool she built at her home.
She brings decades of swimming-teacher experience to lessons for people who’d rather learn away from a crowd. I can see the appeal for a nervous beginner who wants to ask questions without an entire class splashing past.
The pool can be booked separately for spa days and children’s parties, so it has uses beyond lessons.
For swimming tuition, though, the draw is simple: you get Julie’s attention and a space to work on your confidence at your own pace.
The spa pool’s smaller format may limit practice if your goal is to swim continuous full lengths. You may want sessions in a larger pool later to get comfortable covering that distance.

I can’t thank Julie enough and would definitely recommend her
My daughter has just completed 10 weeks of lessons with Julie in preparation for our holiday. She is a very shy girl who wasn’t confident in the water but Julie completely put her at ease and was so patient with her. In 10 weeks she worked wonders with her and my daughter gained her 5 metres and level 1 certificate! By the 3rd day of our holiday the pool noodle was discarded and she was confidently swimming full lengths of the pool and swimming underwater! I can’t thank Julie enough and would definitely recommend her.

We are super happy parents!
My daughter is 6 and never had a swimming lesson before. From the very first class, Julie built her confidence. She has amazing techniques perfect for apprehensive learners. There are lot of toys which keeps the children distracted yet they learn with ease. The water is nice and warm, perfect for sensitive and hypoallergenic children. My girl is into her 3 rd lesson and she doesn’t want to leave the pool. It tells how much she enjoys the lessons. We are super happy parents!
