The 5 dance studios in Birmingham that’ll have your feet itching to dance

  • Variety of Dance Styles: We looked for studios that offer more than just the basics—places with a range of styles, including ballet, salsa, and street dance. The more variety, the better for trying something new.
  • Affordability and Class Options: We prioritised studios with fair prices and checked if they offer taster sessions, bundle deals, or flexible drop-ins for short-term visitors.
  • Instructor Vibes and Experience: We ensured the teachers are knowledgeable. We favoured confidence-building vibes over intimidating, overly serious techniques.
  • Studio Atmosphere and Location: Even if we were looking for a fancy mirrored room or a gritty warehouse space, we chose places with a great atmosphere that were easily accessible by foot, bus, or train.

So the other day, my friend said we needed to “get a life” and dragged me to one of the dance studios in Birmingham.

I thought we’d last ten minutes, but somehow, we ended up sweating, laughing, and signing up for another class.

Who knew dancing could actually be fun, even if you’ve got two left feet like me? It turns out that Birmingham has some pretty cool studios for all kinds of dancers—newbies, pros, and people just winging it.

And even if you’re just here for a week or live around the corner, you can try our top picks of the best dance studios in the city,

How much do dance studios charge in Birmingham?

Dance studios in Birmingham typically charge between £6 and £12 per class. However, the total amount depends on the style, level, and instructor experience. Many offer multi-class passes or private lessons for those wanting extra practice.

Fabric isn’t your average dance studio; it’s more like a movement lab, boasting over 60 years of combined experience. Formed from the merger of DanceXchange and Dance4, it’s now a central force for dance innovation across the Midlands.

They offer everything from Ballet and Jazz to Bollywood, urban fusion and Vogue. We dropped into a contemporary class and left feeling energised, sweaty, and genuinely inspired by the creative freedom.

However, some aspects of the program seem more geared towards professionals or those seeking long-term training, such as the artist residencies or CAT sessions. So, if you’re just looking for a casual drop-in, a few of these might feel a bit too niche or structured.

Even so, we appreciate their inclusive work, like the Keep Moving Project, which supports young people living with long-term health conditions. Projects like this demonstrate that FABRIC values dance as a tool for creativity and well-being.

Pros

  • Over 60 years of combined experience
  • Massive range of dance styles
  • Strong focus on community and wellbeing

Cons

  • Less accessible to casual dancers or short-term visitors

Beautiful studio and great facilities

“This place is beautiful and the studio are great. The big windows allow for a fair amount of natural light, the mirrors are huge, and the dance floort is neat.”

Welcoming LGBT+ dance experience

“Went for a free taster dance class set up for the  LGBT+ community. It was really good fun, the teacher was really patient and very entertaining and knowledgeable. Can’t wait for my next dance lesson.”

If you’re looking for range, this studio’s got it—flamenco, jive swing, Egyptian dance, and more. It’s one of the few places where you could cha-cha one week and tap your heart out the next.

We tried their six-week Ballet for Complete Beginners and were glad no one batted an eye when we flailed through pliés. The courses are slow-paced and super-friendly, making them perfect for absolute newbies.

Plus, their Ladies Salsa Styling workshop provided us with a significant boost in confidence. With dance artist Helen Calcutt leading, it was all about flair, footwork, and owning your space.

However, while the studio offers Pilates Reformer classes through its collaboration with Bodyworks Studios, the information on the website was somewhat difficult to follow. Between confusing class listings, we had to call to figure out what was running.

Pros

  • Massive style variety
  • Offers beginner courses
  • Integrates Pilates for a full dance-fitness experience

Cons

  • Website and class info can be unclear

Great Pilates and a welcoming atmosphere

“I have been attending Pilates classes at the Dance Workshop for several years now. It’s great exercise for keeping you mobile and flexible and Rita and Joelle are both excellent teachers. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming and informal, and you  can take classes at all levels. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it!”

Expert Pilates and life-changing results

“My right leg was reconstructed to fix multiple leg & knee fractures & my surgeon advised that I would never kneel again.  However, my rheumatologist recommended Pilates & my journey with Rita Parker began.  Rita’s Pilates classes have widened my knowledge of how my body functions as a whole & in isolation, hence my leg function is greatly improved.  Rita has an precise, encyclopedic knowledge of the anatomy, the muscle groups and how they perform, so I have a better understanding of my body & this has a beneficial effect on my mental health. If you want physical well being, if you want a trusted tutor with decades of experience, if you want excellence delivered in a welcoming environment & if you want to do the best for yourself then join Rita’s Pilates class.”

The Vault Studios offers almost every dance style under one roof, including ballet, Latin, and more. Whether you’re just starting or dancing professionally, there’s something on the schedule for you.

A friend joined the commercial class and immediately felt the energy. The instructors are skilled, supportive, and can push you without making things stressful.

The only downside? It can become very busy during popular classes, making it more challenging to move freely or receive personalised feedback.

But the studio space is also excellent. It features properly sprung floors, a good sound system, changing rooms, and showers. Additionally, booking is easy with their 24/7 online system, which is particularly convenient for last-minute plans.

And what we love most is the vibe. They host workshops, competitions, and showcases that unite the whole dance community. Even if you’re dancing for fun or chasing the spotlight, The Vault makes you feel part of something exciting.

Pros

  • Big range of styles for all levels and ages
  • Great facilities
  • Easy online booking
  • Active community with events and workshops

Cons

  • Classes can get crowded during peak hours

Amazing teacher and welcoming family

“My girls love dancing with Holly! She is incredible at what she does, and the whole family at the vault studios have welcomed them with open arms! Such a vibe in there! Holly is amazing with the kids and wants them all too succeed in what they love most! Everyone is so talented! ❤”

Welcoming and encouraging dance team

“My daughter started summer 2022 and in such a short time her confidence has grown, this is down to Holly and her dancers ensuring she felt welcomed and encouraged her to be herself. Holly cares for all of her dancers and their future goals, already my daughter has been on 3 amazing opportunities including opening the Nathan Dawe Show at Utilita Arena. Huge thanks to Holly and the dance family we can’t wait for the upcoming year.”

XI is known as Birmingham’s first K-pop-focused dance studio, and the vibe here is ultra-polished. We booked a K-pop choreography class and honestly felt like we’d stepped into a real idol rehearsal.

Beyond K-pop, you can try hip-hop, jazz-funk, waacking, or even Chinese dance in a sleek space. The variety makes it perfect for dancers exploring different styles without having to hop from studio to studio.

Besides that, Studio 2 also deserves a mention. It’s futuristic, decked out with LED strip lights and customisable lighting, perfect for dance filming or rehearsals. There’s even a mobile app that makes booking, scheduling, and studio reservations feel seamless.

Just a heads-up, though: private classes start from £42 per hour. It’s ideal for dancers who are truly committed to training or seeking personalised coaching.

They also post regular class videos and performances on TikTok and YouTube, showcasing their clean formations and strong technique.

Pros

  • Specialises in K-pop and popular global styles
  • Offers multiple genres
  • LED-lit studio perfect for content creation
  • Easy booking via mobile app
  • Strong social media presence

Cons

  • Private classes can be pricey

Spacious and professional studio

“Booked this place for a K-pop class. Spacious, professional, and the lighting makes you feel like you’re on stage. Highly recommended!”

Amazing studio experience

“I had booked the studio twice and had amazing experience and best shots what I want looking forward to make more content at XI Dance Studio in future 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻☺️☺️☺️”

Steps Dance Academy offers a full range of ballet, jazz, and tap classes, carefully grouped by age and skill level. The classes are well-structured and highly focused on training, especially for young dancers seeking to establish a strong foundation.

They also offer sweet preschool classes, such as “First Steps Together” and “First Steps Independent,” which help build kids’ confidence and coordination from an early age. It’s the kind of start that makes you wish you’d discovered dance at a younger age.

What’s more, we appreciate how family-centred the environment is. Even from the sidelines, you feel the strong bond between the teachers, students, and parents. It’s warm, grounded, and clearly built over time.

However, adults hoping to drop in casually might find fewer options as the focus leans heavily on kids and term-based classes.

Regardless, the studio remains many people’s favourite due to its convenient location. It’s situated at School Lane, and several bus routes serve the vicinity.

Pros

  • Has an award system that recognises students
  • Specialises in preschool classes
  • Friendly and experienced teachers
  • Strong family-oriented community vibe
  • Convenient location

Cons

  • Limited casual class options for adults

Friendly, no-pressure dance class

“If you want a friendly dance class which puts no pressure on the children then look no further. My Daughter has been learning to dance with Steps for 18 months and has grown in confidence. Although she’s not yet taken any dance exams, she has been part of a show last December with no sign of nerves.  She enjoys her weekly sessions and learning new moves. So pleased we chose this dance class. Thank you Steph, Beth and the team for making learning so enjoyable and dance fun xx”

Brilliant holistic approach to teaching

“Highly recommended… my daughter started lessons for the first time as a young teenager with no prior dance experience, Steph & Beth at Steps dance academy have a brilliant holistic approach to teaching and taught her so well that she was able to learn the foundations quickly and effectively whilst still being able to stay in a group for her age range. She’s had an amazing time at steps and I  highly recommend it to anyone looking to take their dance skills to the next level. The instructors are not only talented but genuinely passionate about teaching, and they create a positive, welcoming environment for dancers of all levels. The classes are well-structured, challenging, and fun, with a focus on building strong technique while encouraging creativity. I can see that my daughter has grown so much as a dancer since joining, and it’s also become a place where she feels like part of a family with a lot of support available . If you’re serious about dance or just looking to have fun and improve, this is definitely the place to be!”
