Relax and recharge at the top 10 bed and breakfasts in Birmingham

There’s something I really love about staying at a bed and breakfast. Unlike a hotel, I don’t have to think about where to grab breakfast. It’s already waiting when I wake up, and it makes the whole experience feel more relaxing.

What I enjoy the most, though, is how homey it feels. Instead of the polished hotel vibes, B&Bs have that lived-in charm that makes me feel right at home (and they’re usually easier to budget too!).

And since I’m not greedy enough to keep them all to myself, I’m sharing my favourite bed and breakfasts in Birmingham. Trust me, once you try these, you might forget about hotels altogether.

Conveniently located in Birmingham City Centre, The Duke of Wellington Hotel & Bar is a great place to stay. Guests can easily explore Birmingham and find their way back after a long day. The best part is that it’s also a lively pub in the evenings.

While the rooms are small, they’re well-lit and have great privacy with grey curtains. All of the rooms come with free Wi-Fi. For accommodation, I found that their cheapest can fit a single guest, while the largest room can easily house a family or group of five.

Amenities that I particularly enjoy are the daily housekeeping and the express check-in and out, which takes out the hassle of staying in places like these. Additionally, all rooms come with free breakfast. If that isn’t enough, the bar also has great snacks.

Pro Tip:

Before booking, I’d like you to check their social media. They often have sneaky discount links available that can save up to 10% off on any room. Booking in advance can also sometimes give you an equivalent discount.

Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday: 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Pricing: £

Located in South Birmingham, Elmdon Lodge is a quiet and secluded place to explore the West Midlands. With 16 different guest bedrooms, guests can expect to enjoy themselves in the guest lounge’s expansive library and the large garden patio area.

It’s a bit disappointing that breakfast comes with an additional charge, but the portion sizes make up for it. Guests will be greeted with a large and piping hot Full English Breakfast. This comes with beans and sausages.

The rooms come with either an en-suite shower room or a shared shower room, depending on which one guests will choose.

Pro Tip:

If you’re not into the Full English breakfast, there’s something for everyone since they also serve lighter meals and vegan options. In the evenings, you can request a meal to be prepared beforehand for dinner, with an extra charge.

Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday: 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM

A charming guest lodge that is close to the University of Birmingham and the city centre, Westbourne Lodge provides all the comforts of your home. When I stayed here, I was surprised that it was a fully functioning house rather than one with small guest rooms.

The house can accommodate up to five people, with two large beds in the bedroom. There’s also a fully functioning kitchen, equipped with condiments and basic spices. Laundry facilities are also present, accompanied by a dryer and ironing facilities.

What I truly enjoyed was the expansive private gardens in the backyard that were breathtaking. The house is also equipped with CCTV, both inside and out, so I felt quite safe.

Pro Tip:

If you prefer peace and quiet, request a room that backs onto the garden rather than facing the street. Some guests remarked how they valued this.

4. The Moseley Arms

Address: 105 Ravenhurst St, B12 0HB

Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday: 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM

Pricing: £

The Moseley Arms felt more like an inn rather than a bed and breakfast. My stay here was filled with newfound connections with fellow guests and intimate meals in their dining room. It also functions as a pub, filled with a range of spirits for as low as £2.

Each room comes with a plasma TV and hot drink-making facilities. All rooms come with Wi-Fi access and have en suite shower rooms. I also utilised their luggage storage, which made my room a bit spacious.

While breakfast is only available on Sundays, meals are served in the restaurant daily. Free parking is also available, and there are shuttles that can take you to and from the airport at any given time.

Pro Tip:

While free parking is a major perk, being in a central area means “free parking” might mean limited spaces or specific locations. I highly suggest confirming your spot when booking.

5. Old Farm Hotel

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/oldfarmbournville

Address: 108 Linden Rd, Bournville, B30 1LA

Operating Hours: Open 24 hours

Pricing: ££

While it may look like a lovely Edwardian house on the outside, the inside of the Old Farm Hotel has some of the modernised amenities in the market. The hotel has a large garden and a decking area beside it that’s perfect to stay in when the weather permits.

The inside of the hotel holds 12 different rooms, ranging from standard rooms to the expensive ones, like the Cadbury Suite. There’s also a large function venue that’s perfect for small events, like family get-togethers or small and intimate weddings.

As for breakfast, it’s free and served in the indoor restaurant. In the evenings, guests can visit the small bar and enjoy a nice pint of Guinness or cider.

Pro Tip:

Rooms here can get expensive, so booking through a third-party app will save a few pounds. For instance, a stay in their standard room would’ve cost £138, but they sometimes bring it down to £99.

6. Frederick Street Townhouse

Operating Hours: Open 24 hours

Offering a more antique aesthetic, I found Frederick Street Townhouse to be quaint and lovely. I was able to relax and truly enjoy my stay, with the muted warm and cool tones in their decor. I genuinely felt like I was staying in a Victorian noble’s house.

The cheaper rooms are smaller, yet they come with comfortable beds and a roomy shower. Additionally, there are televisions in each room as well as Wi-Fi that extends throughout the facility. All of the rooms are accessible via wheelchair.

When it comes to breakfast, it’s served at the Button Factory next door. When dining here, you can expect fresh pastries and a collection of berries and fruit. They also serve a Full English Breakfast, or you can be trendy like me and order an avocado toast.

Pro Tip:

The reception isn’t manned at all times, so you can expect to wait a bit before getting booked. I went down to the Button Factory next door to grab a cold beer while waiting, and the bar staff were accommodating and apologetic.

7. The Old Crown

Serving Birmingham for 656 years, The Old Crown has withstood the English Civil War and continues to serve guests with honest hospitality and charisma. My stay here was exciting because of the nightly quiz nights and the captivating music in the pub.

Despite the noise in the pub, I didn’t actually hear much of it while staying here. All the rooms came with free Wi-Fi and included a tea and coffee maker. For choices, rooms can range from single beds to double beds, with either shared or private bathrooms

Sadly, breakfast isn’t included in the stay. Guests can eat elsewhere or go to the pub to grab a bite.

Pro Tip:

If you want to eat like kings while staying here, I suggest waiting for the Weekly Sunday Roast Special. It comes with all the necessary classics, and they also offer vegetarian and vegan options.

8. Innkeeper’s Collection

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/InnkeepersCollection

Address: The Kings Arms, 2110 Warwick Rd, Knowle, Solihull B93 0EE

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Saturday: 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Pricing: ££

The Innkeeper’s Collection is a well-known group of inn owners in the UK. With locations across the country, I was intrigued enough to stay at their location in Solihull: The King’s Arms. The inside has a mixture of modern amenities and antique decor.

Large windows in every room provide natural light, and there is an ample back garden with a few chairs to sit on. The rooms can accommodate a single person or a small family, and some even have a lounging area with sofas.

While breakfast comes with an extra charge, it’s served quickly and fresh. It’s also one of the few hotels and inns in Birmingham that is pet-friendly, which is great for fur parents.

Pro Tip:

Since they promise “book direct & save”, make sure you check their website first (or call) before booking via third-party sites. This often means lower rates plus more flexibility.

9. The Greenland’s Inn

Address: Weoley Ave, B29 6PP

Contact Details: +44 121 475 1564

Operating Hours: Open 24 hours

Pricing: £

Having been recently renovated, The Greenland’s Inn has 28 ensuite bedrooms that are spacious and contemporary. Accessible by train or bus, I found it easy to head from the inn to the city centre. It’s also close to the airport and the Touchwood Shopping Centre.

The inn is very bare bones in its design choices, using muted and dull colours and simple furniture in the rooms and throughout the hotel. Meals are the highlight when staying here, since I was able to enjoy a home-cooked meal throughout my entire stay.

You can also find a large bar area that’s constantly playing sports on high-definition TVs and a projector. Other forms of entertainment include a pool table and snooker. There’s also a large beer garden outside, with a separate bar and television.

Pro Tip:

When heading here, I recommend that you also find time to visit Cadbury World. The inn provides a special 10% discount to guests who include this in their trip. You can also get 2 free nights with certain tours of Cadbury World.

10. Saint Paul’s House

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/saintpaulshouse

Address: 15-20 St Paul’s Square, B3 1QU

Contact Details: +44 121 272 0999

Operating Hours:

  • Sunday to Wednesday: 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM
  • Thursday: 7:00 AM to 12:00 AM
  • Friday to Saturday: 7:00 AM to 1:00 AM

Pricing: ££

Saint Paul’s House is an exemplary hotel that balances extravagance with comfort, with a redbrick Georgian exterior. The hotel’s walls are simple, with white or grey paint and minimal paintings in the rooms and the main lobby.

When it comes to amenities, they have free Wi-Fi in every room and luxury bedding that’s comfortable to sleep in. The showers are modernised waterfalls, and the staff offers daily housekeeping to guests. All the rooms are also air-conditioned with heating.

When it comes to food, you can either order their breakfast specials or wait for their Bottomless Brunch. At £38 for two courses or £42 for three courses, the menu also includes unlimited Prosecco.

Pro Tip:

Ask for a room on a higher floor or away from the street if you want quieter sleep. Many city-centre boutique hotels have more noise on lower floors.
