The 5 best dog trainers in Birmingham for better-behaved pups

  • Experience and Expertise: We prioritised trainers who have expertise in the field over their love for dogs. We then examined their formal qualifications and recognised certifications, such as those from the Kennel Club and hands-on skills.
  • Range of Services: We looked for trainers who go beyond just teaching basic obedience. We selected ones that offer behaviour modification, one-to-one coaching, and specialised classes for reactive dogs.
  • Facilities and Equipment: We verified that the trainers had access to clean, safe, and well-equipped areas, whether they were secure outdoor fields or an indoor training centre with clickers, leads, and other essential equipment.
  • Communication: We chose approachable trainers who explained their methods clearly and kept owners informed about their dogs’ progress. It was important to us that they made the dogs and their owners comfortable.
  • Client Reviews: Nothing beats hearing from other dog owners. We read through reviews, asked around, and ensured the trainers we picked had a solid reputation for delivering excellent results.

We used to joke that our dog had selective hearing. The moment we said, “Treat?” he’d come sprinting over. But when it was time to “Sit,” suddenly he was deaf.

Training him felt like an endless tug-of-war between our patience and those adorable puppy eyes. And if you’ve been in the same situation, trust us, we totally understand.

So, after chatting with fellow dog parents at the park and sharing our experiences online, we discovered we weren’t the only ones facing this challenge. That inspired us to check out a few training sessions ourselves.

That’s why we’ve put together a list of the best dog trainers in Birmingham who can help even the most stubborn dogs.

How much do dog trainers charge in Birmingham?

Dog trainers in Birmingham typically charge £15 to £50 for one-to-one training. However, take note that pricing may vary based on the type of training and the individual trainer’s expertise.

The first thing that caught our attention about Midlandsgrizzlys was their website, as it has videos of real training sessions that show us how they interact with various dogs.

Adam, the head trainer, brings a wealth of expertise to the table. As a GSDL Licensed B Grade Helper, with a V International Decoy and Security GP Level 2 and 3 License, he establishes a level of professional credibility.

On top of this, he’s got three assistants by his side. Each assistant brings their own unique expertise in various aspects of dog training.

But what sets Midlandsgrizzlys apart is their diverse programs. They don’t just offer basic obedience training, but focus on behaviour training for working dogs, off-leash training, and sports protection training.

A friend who worked with Midlandsgrizzlys to train their reactive dog said the training sessions were organised and focused. And after observing the sessions ourselves, we agree that the instructions provided are relatively easy to understand.

However, they require full payment in advance for 10 sessions, which we find somewhat inflexible.

Pros

  • Provides training session videos on their website
  • Highly certified head trainer
  • Structured and precise sessions
  • Helps both dogs and owners build confidence

Cons

  • Required full advance payment for 10 sessions

Transforms dogs into well-mannered and obedient companions

“I couldn’t be more thrilled with the progress my two dogs have made after completing both obedience and off-leash training! They’ve truly transformed into model pets—calm, focused, and well-behaved in every situation. The obedience training laid a solid foundation, teaching them basic commands like sit, stay, and heel, while the off-leash training took their responsiveness to the next level. Now, I can confidently take them on walks or hikes without worrying about them running off or ignoring commands. It’s incredible how much more enjoyable our time together is now that they’re so well-mannered and dependable. Adam did an outstanding job tailoring the program to each dog’s individual needs, and the results speak for themselves. I couldn’t be happier with how amazing and obedient my dogs have become!”

Engaging and effective dog training sessions

“I cannot recommend Adam enough! His expertise, patience, and dedication to both dogs and their owners are truly remarkable. Not only did my dog respond incredibly well to his techniques, but I also learned so much about proper training methods and positive reinforcement. The sessions were engaging, effective, and fun, making the entire experience enjoyable for both of us. Thanks to Adam, my dog is now well-behaved, more confident, and happier than ever. If you’re looking for a professional, compassionate, and skilled trainer, look no further. I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone in need of top-quality dog training!”

Our Love For Dogs doesn’t just teach commands to dogs, but they also make sure to understand what each individual dog needs.

Aside from this, their free one-hour video consultation stood out to us. They dedicated time to listening, understanding our situation, and providing honest advice before we made any commitments.

Beyond this, we appreciate that trainers do not limit themselves to just indoor spaces. Instead, they customise their sessions to suit real-life environments, such as at home or in the park.

They also provide a mobile training service, where they travel directly to the dog owner’s home. We value this service because it’s a great choice for dog owners, like us, with hectic schedules or those who prefer training in a familiar setting.

It’s also great to learn that they help dogs of all sizes and breeds, including those with behavioural problems. One client even shared how quickly their reactive dog improved in just a few weeks.

The only downside is that they can be slow to respond to inquiries. That’s why if you’re in a rush, it’s best to follow up or book early.

Pros

  • Free hour-long video consultation
  • Real-life setting training
  • Works with all breeds
  • Provides clear instructions and practical tools
  • Offers a mobile training service

Cons

  • Slow response times

Provides personalised training with ongoing support

“I can’t thank Claire enough for all the support and guidance she’s given. Archie’s behaviour has really improved and he loved working with Claire, as did I. Training focused on positive reinforcement of Archie’s behaviour and was always relevant to what I wanted to work on. We worked on training in the house, garden and used local parks to introduce new environments and stimulus. Claire would check in with us throughout the week as to how training was going and provided pictures and videos to support us. I would fully recommend Claire and For the Love of Dogs training.”

Builds confidence in owners and their dogs

“Amanda has been great with helping me to train my puppy Border Terrier, Thor. Helping with greeting people and dogs has been fantastic, still a work in progress but so much better with the tips from Amanda. Walking to heel, never thought that would happen but Thor was doing this after just 1 session. On our last session we walked in the park with Thor mostly off lead again and never believed that I would be able to do this. Amanda has given Thor and me the confidence to continue with our training and I know that she is there in the future if I need help. Would thoroughly recommend it, especially if you have a puppy. I have had dogs before but learnt so much in the 7 sessions with Amanda.”

What we like most about Dogs Behaving Gladly is that they use games to train the dogs. These include focus-building, impulse control, and recall games.

Lewis, the owner, is a trusted and caring trainer who combines his professional credentials with real-life experience.

As a certified Institute of Modern Dog Trainer (IMDT) and a Pro Dog Trainer with AbsoluteDogs (a UK-based company renowned for its game-based approach to dog training), he’s got a solid grasp of what makes dogs tick.

But what really sets him apart is his heart. He even rescued Elio, a former street dog from Spain, who now helps as a therapy dog and assistant trainer.

We also love the variety of programs being offered. Whether you have a highly energetic puppy or an older dog in need of a refresher, the team offers classes tailored to different life stages.

Their puppy and training package is also a good deal at £299.00, which already includes private sessions, a WhatsApp coaching group, and a Facebook group with extra activities.

However, in-person sessions may be limited by location. If you require regular home visits, please check availability.

Pros

  • Game-based training approach
  • Highly certified owner
  • Offers tailored training for all life stages
  • Competitively priced training package

Cons

  • Limited availability for in-person sessions

Offers expert group and one-on-one training

“Can’t recommend Lewis enough. Such a nice, friendly guy – but more importantly incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Really helped us with our puppy, with the group classes, and also 1-2-1 sessions one of which we did later once our puppy had turned 11 months. If you are looking for a trainer or some advice, Lewis is superb!”

Transforms a troubled puppy into a calm and well-behaved dog

“Lewis has been working with us for the past 3 months to improve our little Dobermans behaviour. We struggled with our Doberman as we were first time owners and extremely overwhelmed and had no clue where to start! Lewis helped us in understanding why our dog was behaving the way he was, how to anticipate bad behaviour and stop it before it happens. Now 3 months on Kobi our now 7 month old puppy is a different dog, he is so calm and we, as owners are much calmer too. When he is naughty, we now know how to deal with outbursts and also his outbursts are less and less because we stop them before they happen! We would highly recommend Lewis and we do to everyone we meet with troublesome dogs to anybody struggling.  Also, our Dobi loves Lewis!”

We appreciate the level of detail in the services provided by Woofology Dog Training. On their website, they offer behaviour consultations, puppy training in both one-on-one and group settings, reactivity training, and even muzzle training.

A friend suggested Amit, the founder and lead trainer. He’s a certified Easy Peasy Puppy Instructor with years of training from the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers. We love how he shared the latest expert knowledge in every training session.

We also like that Woofology Dog Training offers both group and private sessions. This allows you to choose what works best for your dog and your preferred learning style. If you want a combination of both, their package deal for £525 saves you £60.

Apart from this, they focus solely on positive reinforcement techniques. This means there’s no room for punishment; only rewards, trust, and open communication. We appreciate this approach because it promotes lasting behavioural change.

Moreover, many clients have shared sentiments that the team shows patience and profound understanding of dog psychology. They mentioned that the nutrition advice has even improved dogs’ behaviour.

But it’s not always perfect, though. It’s a bit disappointing that they primarily work with larger dogs, so a one-on-one session may be more suitable for smaller breeds.

Pros

  • Structured training programs
  • Certified trainers
  • Offers group and one-on-one training options
  • Uses positive reinforcement techniques
  • Provides helpful dog nutrition advice

Cons

  • Primarily works with larger dogs

Strengthens owner confidence with professional guidance

“We loved working with Amit. He is incredibly knowledgeable and has helped us get more confident with our dog and his ongoing training. Would recommend any dog training!”

Helps reactive dogs make incredible progress

“I reached out to woofology for some help with my reactive border collie. Amit has been amazing and is extremely knowledgeable. He has helped us with multiple struggles we had with Finn and we have made so much fantastic progress. Finn was very reactive to other dogs and had a bite history. I never thought he’d be able to be close to other dogs but yesterday he was able to meet Amit’s dog Elio without even reacting. The difference in Finn is amazing. He’s been so much better on walks and I can’t thank Amit enough for all of his help. I would 100% recommend woofology dog training to anyone who needs help with their dog.”

One thing we really like about Ally’s Dogs is that they offer a free consultation. It’s a good way to see how they work before jumping in fully.

In fact, a friend told us that he had a consultation when his dog started showing reactive behaviour. He found it helpful to understand the next steps to take.

Additionally, Ally’s Dogs stands out due to the variety of training programs they offer. They have packages for basic obedience, behavioural issues, or extreme reactivity training, all tailored to different needs.

They can even handle more complex cases since the team also specialises in behaviour modification and service dog training. Many clients have shared how patient and knowledgeable everyone is, especially when dealing with reactive dogs.

In addition to this, they also go beyond standard training, offering services such as leash training, day training, and even dog daycare.

We also love their social media content, which features numerous training clips and helpful professional tips.

And while they have a 48-hour cancellation window, it’s essential to note that once you’ve made your payment and decide to cancel, your payment won’t be refundable.

Pros

  • Free initial consultation
  • Specialises in behaviour modification
  • Offers diverse training programs
  • Provides regular tips

Cons

  • No refund after payment

Empowers owners with knowledge for better training

“Ally has been such an amazing support, helping me to build my confidence with my training and providing me with the tools and knowledge to create safe and happy walks with my dog Poppy. It is amazing how different Poppy’s behaviour and responsiveness is since working with Ally!”

Creates a fun and supportive dog training community

“Ally is the ultimate dog training jackpot. She’s highly skilled in her field, intuitive in her approach and entirely committed to both her canine and human clients. Every session she has been calm, clear and consistent, with an uncanny knack of knowing just how much to push us to get maximum progress without getting overwhelmed. Ally makes training a lot of fun. I’m sure we learn more because we laugh! My Adit and I are still fairly new to the Ally’s Dogs community but immediately felt like we were part of the tribe. Her army of raving fans hasn’t formed by accident. Ally champions empowered, passionate owners and leads with a vision that inspires confidence and community. This is the dog girl gang of your dreams. If you’re ready to level up your training, Ally’s the boss for you.”
